About
Daniel M. Perez
From earning the rank of Eagle Scout, to his arrests for committing acts of civil disobedience, to the hundreds of cases he has litigated for more than fifteen years, Dan Perez has consistently advanced the founding principles of our nation:
Justice. Equality. Fairness. For all.
Dan Perez has a broad range of high-profile, complex litigation experience. Dan was admitted to the bar in 1995, and immediately became an associate at The Law Offices of Ronald L. Kuby in New York City. Dan's first trial was carried live on Court TV.
In 1999, Dan Perez represented nine members and associates of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club after they were falsely arrested and their clubhouse was raided by over 50 police officers. The lawsuit Dan filed and litigated settled for $565,000, after a videotape surfaced in which two officers were overheard conspiring to evade the plain language of the search warrant. Click here to read more about the case. A subsequent lawsuit that Dan filed on behalf of the Hells Angels settled for nearly $250,000.
In 2003, Dan Perez acted as trial counsel in the civil case of Anthony Faison and Charles Shepherd v. State of New York, a case stemming from the wrongful convictions and unjust convictions of two men who served 14 years in state prison for a murder they did not commit. The case was covered widely by the national media and ultimately settled after trial for $3.3 million. Read some of the press coverage about the Faison case by clicking here.
In 2005, noted fashion designer Marc Ecko's company approached Dan Perez after the City of New York withdrew a permit that Ecko had received to hold a graffiti-themed street festival. Two days later, Dan filed an emergency application for injunctive relief in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, on the ground that the revocation of the permit violated Marc Ecko's First Amendment rights. The application was granted; a federal judge ordered Mayor Bloomberg and the City to re-instate the permit, and the street festival went forward as planned. Click here to read the decision of Hon. Jed Rakoff, U.S.D.J., which granted Dan application for an injunction. Click here to read some of the press coverage about the street festival.
Fast forwarding to 2007, Dan Perez litigated the notable federal civil rights case, Vincenty v. Bloomberg, in which he successfully challenged a purported "anti-graffiti" law that abridged the First Amendment rights of young artists and art students in New York City. A federal trial court entered an injunction enjoining Mayor Bloomberg and the City of New York from enforcing the law; that decision was subsequently upheld by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. From 2003 to 2007, Dan Perez was managing partner of Kuby & Perez LLP, New York City's premiere civil rights law firm. He opened The Law Offices of Daniel M. Perez in 2007, with offices located in Manhattan. In the summer of 2009, Dan relocated to Sussex County, New Jersey and established The Law Offices of Daniel M. Perez in Newton, New Jersey, where he currently practices law.
Dan Perez is an accomplished legal educator. For four years, he was an Adjunct Professor of Law at Fordham Law School where he taught negotiation skills and client counseling to second and third-year law students. Dan has also acted as a legal instructor for the National Rifle Association, lecturing on Firearms and the Law: Possession, Ownership and the Use of Deadly Force in the NRA's Basic Personal Protection courses.
Dan Perez is a distinguished scholar, having received his Juris Doctorate from New York University School of Law, one of the top five law schools in the United States. While at NYU Law, he was Associate Editor of the Review of Law and Social Change. During his third year, he interned for William M. Kunstler, one of America's greatest civil rights attorneys.
Dan graduated cum laude from Rutgers University with a dual major in English and Political Science. He was an Undergraduate Fellow at the Eagleton Institute of Politics, Paul Robeson Honors Scholar, and recipient of the Livingston College Parent's Award.
Dan Perez is committed to his community. Dan proudly earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1987. For his service project, he reclaimed an abandoned, historic cemetery in his hometown of Mahwah, New Jersey. He painstakingly charted every grave -- many of which dated back to the 1700's -- traced the writings on each tombstone, created a scale map, and documented his work in a book that remains in the Mahwah Public Library to this day.
For over 15 years, Dan Perez has represented hundreds of clients in cases ranging from false arrests, to wrongful convictions, First Amendment violations, serious criminal charges such as murder and manslaughter, employment discrimination matters, environmental and land use cases, and more. He has tried dozens of cases, perfected over twenty appeals, and won judgments and settlements totaling millions of dollars.
